The environmentally compatible HYBRID drive technology combines the power of an efficient petrol engine with the strengths of an electric motor. A powerful and weight-reduced lithium-ion battery supplies the high-torque electric motor. In combustion mode, the electric motor operates as a generator and feeds energy back into the system. At the same time, brake energy recharges the lithium-ion battery using the regenerative braking system when the brakes are applied. The boost function allows the power of both engines to be used for a brief period when accelerating.
The clean diesel engine in the S 350 BlueTEC combines outstanding performance with low consumption. Injection pressure has been increased, smoothness of operation enhanced and noise development optimised. At the same time, reduced compression ensures lower exhaust emission levels. BlueTEC catalytic converter technology uses the reactant AdBlue® to purify exhaust gases. What remains is essentially water, nitrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2) – the final products of complete combustion. The models already comply with the requirements of the Euro 6 emission class (enters into force in 2014) and can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90%.
With the new 4-cylinder diesel model, the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, downsizing technology is being consistently continued. This engine sets standards in its displacement class in terms of torque and performance, while at the same time boasting very low fuel consumption and emission values.
